RSC-005: Error While Parsing File

RSC-005 is a broad parser or schema category. The words after the code, plus the reported location, are the source of truth for the repair.

Example report

RSC-005: Error while parsing file:
element "tours" incomplete; missing required element "tour"

OEBPS/content.opf:92:9

What this example means

The parser found a <tours> element whose schema requires at least one valid <tour> child. Other RSC-005 messages can identify different elements, syntax errors, namespaces, or resource types, so this repair is not universal.

How to fix the incomplete element

  1. Open OEBPS/content.opf or the resource named in your report and inspect the reported line.
  2. If the <tours> block is unused or accidentally generated, remove the invalid block without disturbing valid surrounding metadata.
  3. If the feature is genuinely used, provide the complete valid <tour> child content required by that schema.
  4. Save the file and revalidate the complete EPUB.

Do not add an empty <tour/> merely to silence EPUBCheck. Schema-valid structure still needs meaningful, valid content for the feature being represented.

If your RSC-005 message is different

Follow its exact element name, expected child, syntax detail, and location. Start with the first parser error because later resource errors may be consequences of the same malformed structure.

A passing EPUBCheck result confirms specification-level validity, but it does not guarantee acceptance by Amazon KDP or another retailer.
